Online Games-A Basic Intro to a Fun New World

Online games are rapidly gaining popularity, as people like being able to logon and play their favorite games with hundreds of people at any given time of day. All you need is a computer, and some sort of Internet connection to play, dial-up is okay, but depending on the type of game you are going to play, it may be too slow and cause you to crash often during gameplay. Many people are starting to rely on online games for their entertainment.

Just about any game you can think of can be found online. You may have to purchase software to play them, or you may have to pay a membership fee, but you can easily find all of your favorites, just by doing a simple Google or Yahoo search using keywords for the game or type of game you are looking for.

Many games that can be played online also have chat options, so you can meet and chat with friends as you play a bonus element for most players. You can vent about your on the job stresses, or talk about your good-for-nothing husband, all while playing your favorite games.

Some of the earliest games to be made available online were text based games known as MUD’s. These games were popular in the 80’s, and were fantasy based role playing games, played mainly over message boards. There were also many board games available, but very few of these early games were free, due to the costs associated with maintaining an Internet game at that time.

Early in the 1990’s, Doom was one of the most popular computer games that could also be played online, using a TCP/IP connection. This started the rise in popularity of first- person shooter games online.

As the technology behind computers and the Internet became more advanced, more detailed games were created. Games were designed to be played using basic Internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Once Flash and Java were developed, even greater online browser-style games were developed. Many old, classic games have been revamped using these programs, and are very popular with players, old and young. Many of these games are played on websites that keep up with your scores, and post scores for other players to see, so if you are competitive, this can be a fun way to use your competitive nature.

Thanks to the Internet, millions of people all over the world can enjoy playing online games and making new friends. Online games can be a great way to relieve stress and get away from real life troubles for a while, as long as you don’t allow yourself to become obsessed to the point of neglecting your real life responsibilities.
